Festac Icon Vol 7 Sunday Oliseh

Festac Icon celebrates one of Nigeria’s best footballer, a ferocious force for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Ex-Nigerian Coach and now Super Eagles coach .

Sunday Oliseh was born in september 14 1974 in Ojota area of Lagos State , Nigeria and hails from Abavo , Delta State. His father  a businessman, while his mother  a staunch Catholic and a retired business woman.

He started his education at the Bright Starr Nursery and Primary School (Ojota), Ajao Estate High school (Anthony Village) and the Methodist boys High school, all in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Sunday Oliseh have always loved and played football ever since he could walk as his parents recounted. He began his career in football in his father’s house in Festac Town Lagos  where he also joined the Local league before advancing ahead. When recounting experience , Dosu one of his team members back then in Festac said

 Sunday and I started playing football as hungry players. We would trek from Festac Town to the Julius Berger training ground every morning. And in the afternoon, we will trek back to Festac because we didn’t have much money for transport fares. Most times we would eat just yam and red oil before we set out for our training sessions. That difficult period gave us the determination and desire to succeed in our careers. Source- Completesportnigeria

Sunday Oliseh has lived in Lawanson, Surulere , Ojota and finally settled in Festac Town where he spent many of his formative years on his journey to becoming a Footballer.

41 Year Old Oliseh has played for well known clubs like AFC Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus F.C

Oliseh  has played 63 international matches and scored four goals for Nigeria, and played at the Football World Cups of 1994 and 1998, he also  participated in the Olympic gold medal winning team of 1996.

Sunday Oliseh can be most remembered for the historic goal scoring during the 1998 world cup against Spain which made Nigeria prevail with a  3–2 score. He captained Nigeria during the 2002 African Cup of Nations

Finally, In January 2006, at the age of 31, Oliseh retired from professional football after playing a half season for Belgian top club K.R.C. Genk.[7]

At the young age of 22, Oliseh played a  crucial part alongside the likes of Okocha, Emmanuel Amunike and Taribo West  making  Nigeria on the winning side in Atlanta 1996

Oliseh Sunday has played for some top clubs, like Ajax, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund.

Absolutely. I live and breathe football. My wife always says ‘If I don’t have football I get sick.’ I follow all of my former clubs, with a passion. I hope every year to have at least one finish as a champion. Oliseh Source

Sunday Oliseh has been said to be a man who cared about the interest of his teammates, a leader in the dressing room thus can be said to be a caring man.

He is now the newly appointed Super Eagles Coach , appointed this position by the Nigerian Football Federation on 14 July 2015.
