National Association of Seadogs leads awareness campaign against Lassa fever

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), Lagos Mainland chapter, comprising Yaba, Surulere, Festac, Apapa, and Badagry, took the  Lassa fever awareness campaign to the streets when they led a procession through Tejuosho/Yaba market, Ojuelegba, Jibowu and the Yaba motor park.

This was necessitated by the outbreak of Lassa fever with its attendant consequences on human lives.

Despite the assurances given by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, that it will be eradicated in April, it resurfaced in August, with two deaths recorded at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital LUTH) out of five cases.

The campaign was led by the Lagos Mainland Captain, Mr. Arinze Odiari, and the walk had a full retinue of medical support team comprising the NAS team of medical doctors, led by Dr. Andrew Onemu and Dr. Ola Oyeneyin, who provided citizens with insight into the damage that Lassa fever can cause.

As part of the campaign, NAS members walked through the streets in organised groups distributing fliers/handbills and advising the public through public address systems.

They took their time to inform everyone in pidgin English and the three main languages – Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa – about the Lassa fever scourge, its symptoms, early detection, prevention, treatment and need for prompt report to the nearest medical centre across the state.
